Week of May 15, 2017

This week we wrap up Napoleon and his influence of nationalism on Europe.  We will then focus on Klemens von Metternich of Austria and see how he tried to stamp out nationalism and restore the old order, but was unable to do so.   Finally we will see how Otto von Bismarck used industrialization and nationalism to unify Germany.

Week of May 1, 2017

May 1st is May Day, a major worker's holiday.  Why does the color red represent the May Day worker's holiday?   What are the three factors of production?  Which represents the worker.

This week we continue our discussion of the French and Industrial Revolutions.
We will focus on major changes in the 1800's.  In art we will focus on  realism, romanticism and impressionism .  We will also focus on these three individuals who helped to shape the 19th century:   France's Napoleon Bonaparte,  Austria's Clemens von Metternich, 
and Prussia's  Otto von Bismarck.  
They all had a key role in the political,  economic, and military shaping of modern Europe.

We will be studying the French Revolution this week we will review the French connection to the American Revolution. We will  see the role that American inventor and diplomat Ben Franklin played in convincing France to help the American Revolutionary cause.  Why would an absolute monarchy  help democratic revolutionaries?  What does the phrase "an enemy of my enemy is my friend" mean.  Who was our friend in WWII who later became our enemy?
