Week of January 30,2011

We will be reviewing the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt this week. Make sure you understand the causes and possible outcomes of these revolutions.

On Wednesday we will have a test on Chapter 13: Renaissance, Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution. We will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday for this test.

Identify the terms, people, and places listed on page 477. Read teh Witness History on page 477, what did Bartolome de Las Casas say was silent about the new world discoveries? How does the painting on page 478 show cultural blending? Look at the Spanish Cathedral pictured on page 479, how can you tell that religion is a vital part of the community? Look at the pie carts on page 480. Which group lost most of its population? What category was added in 1650? Why? What is being smuggled in the picture on page 481? Why do you think this smuggling occured?

Week of January 24,2010

Early in the week we will review the religious, political, and economic impact of the Reformation in Europe and we will also view the Scientific Revolution which caused a giant intellectual shift.

For homework this week I would like you to complete these sections before Friday. You can turn them in any day before then.

14(3) European Footholds in South and Southeast Asia (457-460) Identify the terms, people and places listed on page 457. Read the Gunfire over Malacca (457)What technology did the Portguese use to build its empire? Look at the two pictures on page 458, how did European and Asian artists show their different perspectives about the early encounters? What is the Asian symbol of power in the painting on page 459?

Monday is a day off to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. How did his contributions to society compare to his namesake, Martin Luther?

Tuesday:13(3)Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation assigned last week is due and will be discussed.

Due Thursday: 13(4) Reformation Ideas Spread (428-433)
Identify the terms, people, and place listed on page 428. Read A King Speaks out on page 428. Did Henry VIII originally oppose or support Luther's brak from the church? read the biography of Elizabeth I biography on page 429. What three accomplishments of Elizabeth led to what was called the Elizabethian Age? Read the major events of the English Reformation. Why did King Henry VIII break from the Church in 1533? How long did it take him to take over the Church of England with the Act of Supremacy? Look at the map of major European Religions about 1600. How many religions existed in the Holy Roman Empire? Why do you think the Holy Roman Empire could not unite into one unified nation? Look at the primary source on page 433. How did Teresa of Avila try to end the Reformation in France?

Week of January 10, 2011

In class on Monday we will discuss 13(2) and the art of the Northern Renaissance.
Before we complete the chapter and move on to the Reformation and Scientific Revolution we will look at the impact of exploration and the discovery of the New World.
Remember that Constantinople fell in 1453 and the Muslims controlled the routes to the Asian spice trade. A new route had to be found to get these spices.

Due Wednesday: 14(1) the Search for Spices(446-451)
Identify the terms people and places listed on page 446. Read the search is on at the top of p.446, list four of the spices Europeans wanted from Asia.
Look at the Map Skills on page 447, answer question #3.
Look at the infographic on page 449.
Identify the five and illustrate three of the tools used in the Age of Exploration. Read the biography on page 450 and list three facts about Prince Henry the Navigator.
Answer assessment questions #3-6 (odd or even) on page 451.

Due Thursday: 14(2) Turbulent Centuries in Africa (p.452-455) Identify the terms, people and places on page 452. Answer map skills questions #2+3 on page 454. Look at the picture on page 455. Why did the Portuguese build castles in Africa?

Due Friday. 13(3) The Protestant Reformation (423-427) Identify the terms, people and places listed on page 423. What is Luther doing in the picture on page 423? Read the biography of Martin Luther on page 425 and answer the question at the bottom. Look at the Calvinist Church pictured on page 427, how does it differ from Medieval Cathedrals?

Current Event Week #5 will be passed out this week and due by next Monday.
Trans-Atlantic Slave trade interview can be listened to in place of Current Event. Listen to at least 20 minutes of the interview and list 10 statements from the interview.

This week in class we will begin studying the Renaissance. We will have a quiz on Wednesday based on the notes given in class on Monday and Tuesday.
