Week of May 1, 2017

May 1st is May Day, a major worker's holiday.  Why does the color red represent the May Day worker's holiday?   What are the three factors of production?  Which represents the worker.

This week we continue our discussion of the French and Industrial Revolutions.
We will focus on major changes in the 1800's.  In art we will focus on  realism, romanticism and impressionism .  We will also focus on these three individuals who helped to shape the 19th century:   France's Napoleon Bonaparte,  Austria's Clemens von Metternich, 
and Prussia's  Otto von Bismarck.  
They all had a key role in the political,  economic, and military shaping of modern Europe.

Read the caption to the picture (701) Who did the Italians fight in Venice?
Look at the map (703)  Identify the four men most responsible for Italian unification.  List one fact about each man.
Look at the picture of Italian emigration (704) What country did many Italians go to in the 1800’s and 1900’s?

Week of April 24, 2017

Welcome back from vacation.  We are now in the home stretch of the school year.  Keep working hard.  
This week we look at the causes of revolutions, especially the French and the Industrial Revolution.
When and why do people revolt?   
Do women and men revolt over the same types of issues?  Think SPRITE EM.

Week of April 3, 2017

We will be studying the French Revolution this week we will review the French connection to the American Revolution. We will  see the role that American inventor and diplomat Ben Franklin played in convincing France to help the American Revolutionary cause.  Why would an absolute monarchy  help democratic revolutionaries?  What does the phrase "an enemy of my enemy is my friend" mean.  Who was our friend in WWII who later became our enemy? 

Homework due at the end of next week.

Read Witness history (608). What type of power emerged in the Industrial Rev.?  Who improved the steam engine and why was this important?
