Week of February 28 - March 4,2011

This week we will study the absolute monarchies in Spain, France and Russia in the "age of absolutism".

In Monday's class we will review the different forms of governments: monarchy (absolute vs. limited vs. enlightened), dictatorship, aristocracy, oligarchy, anarchy,mobocracy, democracy, kleptocracy vs. commonwealth,
What is divine right of kings?
We will see if we can understand the causes of Arab revolutions in Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.

Homework for the week:
16(1) and 16(2) should have been completed.
Due Wednesday: Read about the forms of dictatorship on page 1164. Identify and define the three types of dictatorship. Look at the glossary of political terms. How would a constitution and rule of law impact the powers of a dictator? Explain.

Due Thursday 16(3) Parliament Triumphs in England (516-523)
Identify the terms, people, and places listed on 516. Read Charting a collision course (516) Why did James think God would call kings gods? Read a voice for absolutism (517) Describe the life of man without a strong government according to Hobbes. Answer Critically thinking question #1 on page 519.Read on Puritan heritage (521)Why did Puritans establish public schools?
There are seven checkpoint questions, complete five.

Read the Primary Source on the English Bill of Rights (p. 524) Answer thinking critically question #1+2.

Read the caption to the picture on 507, what territory did the Spanish lose in 1648. Who painted the picture on page 508? How do you think he got this name? Read the section on Don Quixote on page 509. What did Don Quixote think the windmills were? Answer question #2 on page 509.

16(2) France under Louis XIV (14th) (510-514) Identify the terms, people, and places on page 510. Read Life at Versailles (510) list 3 adjectives for life at the court. Read the Biography of Cardinal Richelieu (511). What two occupations did Richelieu's parents want him to follow? What was their goal? Read the primary source on page 512; according to Bossuet who does the prince have to answer to? Why? Read the infographic on page 513, answer Thinking Critically questions 1+2.
Answer comprehension questions #3-5 on page 514.

We will use Thursday's Class as a review of chapters 14, 15 and 16(1) for a test on Friday.
