Week of March 14, 2016

Honor's Rum reading is due on Thursday.  Be prepared for a quiz on the reading.

Happy pie day on Monday.   What people were the first to identify pie? (3.14...)

Who was warned to beware of the ides of March?  Ides is the Roman term for the 15th day of the month?  What happened on the ides of March 44 BC?

Who was St. Patrick and why do we celebrate St. Patrick's Day?   What color does Chicago dye the Chicago River for St. Patrick's Day?

This week we will be completing an in class salon of leaders and political philosophers.   Salons were discussions  typically held in women's homes during the enlightenment.

The homework assigned last week on the French Revolution will be due next week.

Questions for classroom discussion in preparation for our salon.  Be prepared to discuss in groups.

1.  Is man's nature good or evil?  If man is born good then why do we have crime?

2.  What is better for a school: a strong or a weak principal?  Describe the school climate with a strong or a weak principal or a strong or a weak teacher.

3. What is better for a nation: a stong or a weak leader?  Explain your answer.

4.  In Massachusetts the petty theft becomes Grand Larceny ( a felony) when the amout exceeds $250.  A felony conviction follows you throughout your life (college and job applications...) Should this amount be raised?  Explain your answer.

5,  What is the difference between a right and a privilege?  When, if ever do people have the right to revolt against the government?

I will assign groups for the enlightnement debate which will occur later this week.  Homework for the week will be preparation for this debate.  The debate and written praparation and analysis for the debate will be graded as this week's quiz grade.
