Q4W7 World History

This is the last assignment of the term, due by Thursday.

Choose 1 assignment  (I, II)

I. Some critics of the Black Lives Matter movement contend that all lives matter,  and Black Lives Matter does not address this. James White, New England Patriot and son of a Florida police officier responded to this criticism:

"As a black person in America all we ask is to be treated justly. We breathe and bleed the same way as everyone else. When we say “black lives matter” it is to raise awareness for the unjust treatment that we have been dealing with for far too long. It doesn’t mean we hate America or the flag, it also doesn’t mean we are more important than any other race. Of course ALL lives matter.

We simply want to see changes because we can’t keep seeing things like innocent people being killed or beaten by the police or even being racially profiled by fellow Americans( just to name a few). We don’t want to be “feared “or seen as a “threat”. We want young black kids to feel like they matter in our society and that they don’t have to feel inferior because the color of their skin. We have to make a change! We all can make a difference! #blacklivesmatter #nojusticenopeace"

   a.  Do you agree or disagree with White's response?  Explain why.
   b.   I believe that change will occur in America because the Black Lives Matter movement is being led by your generation.  Is voting essential for this movement to succeed? Do you think this movement can succeed if young voter turnout at the polls does not occur this fall?

II.  Krystian Knutel's mom grew up in Poland and she recommended this video that tells an important story.     WW2 began on September 1, 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland from the West and the Soviet Union later invaded Poland from the East.
In the spring of 1944 the Nazis were retreating from Warsaw in the face of a Soviet advance.
Polish partisans (wearing red and white) rose up to defeat the Nazis in the Sabaton Uprising. The Soviets chose to stop their advance and allow the Nazis to return to Warsaw.

The lyrics follow:

Warsaw rise

Do you remember when, when the Nazis forced their rule on Poland
1939 and the allies turned away
From the underground rose a hope of freedom as a whisper
City in despair, but they never lost their faith

Women, men and children fight
They were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
Was a sacrifice willingly paid
Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
1944 help that never came
Calling Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
History calling to you, 'Warszawo, walcz!'
Spirit soul and heart
In accordance with the old traditions
1944 still the allies turn away
Fighting street to street
In a time of hope and desperation
Did it on their own and they never lost their faith
Women, men and children fight
They were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
Was a sacrifice willingly paid
Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
1944 help that never came
Calling Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
History calling to you, 'Warszawo, walcz!'
All the streetlights in the city
Broken many years ago
Break the curfew, hide in sewers
Warsaw, it's time to rise now
All the streetlights in the city
Broken many years ago
Break the curfew, hide in sewers
Warsaw, it's time to rise now
Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
1944 help that never came
Calling Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
History calling to you, 'Warszawo, walcz!'
